Where you're going

The capital of Kenya and a vital tourist gateway to the game parks of East Africa, Nairobi is the perfect originating point for safaris. The name Nairobi comes from the Maasai phrase Enkare Nyirobi, which translates to "the place of cool waters.” However, it is popularly known as the "Green City in the Sun." The city’s history dates back to the times of rail travel and was a stopping place on the rail line between the coast and Uganda because there was always a plentiful supply of water to fill the boilers on the locomotive. Founded in 1899, the city was handed capital status from Mombasa in 1905. Today, Nairobi is the most populous city in East Africa with an estimated urban population of between 3.5 and 4 million making it the 4th largest city in Africa. The high altitude makes for pleasant temperatures throughout the year

Just 6 miles from the city center and only 45 square miles in size is Nairobi National Park, Kenya’s oldest National Park, which was established around 1946. With over 500 varieties of birds recorded and more than 100 mammal species, it makes a great early morning or afternoon excursion from the city center. Common sightings include zebra, giraffe, buffalo, ostrich, gazelle, eland, hippo, vulture, and lion. It is also a great place to see black rhino

Where you're staying

Safari Park Hotel & Casino - Nairobi stands proudly in a beautifully landscaped setting incorporating a wide variety of indigenous trees and offering sanctuary to a startling array of birds and butterflies. The history of the Safari Park Hotel & Casino - Nairobi, often described as the Eden of Africa, dates back to the independence of Kenya. The buildings, then occupied by the British Air Forces, were converted into the Hotel, set in a splendid park conceived by internationally famous landscapers. In 1976, the Paradise Group acquired the Hotel, set about a major restoration, and added new buildings. After considerable work, the gala inaugural evening took place in November 1992. The property is located 15 minutes from the city center on the Thika Highway, which heads toward Mt. Kenya

The distinguishing difference of the Safari Park Hotel & Casino - Nairobi is the multi-story complexes of accommodations. The owners chose to create clusters of guest accommodations into Guest Villages to expose the tropical African gardens

Each and every guest room has a balcony overlooking the gardens. Guest rooms feature hand carved wooden four-poster beds, surrounded by modern facilities like refrigerated mini-bars, satellite television, internet connection, electronic safes and more! All of the amenities that you would expect of such a high-class establishment including 24 hour in room dining will ensure that your stay will be pleasant, relaxing and luxurious

Today’s Experience

You leave Nairobi after breakfast today and travel toward Kenya's fertile highlands and head down the Rift Escarpment on a road built by Italian 'prisoners of war' during World War II. Look out for a view of the charming little chapel they built at the foot of the escarpment. You'll pass the impressive Longonot earth satellite station as you head across the Great Rift Valley to Narok. From Narok, you'll travel across acres of wheat and barley, before you reach the Maasai Mara National Reserve

Where you're going

Undoubtedly the best known of all the Kenya Game Reserves, the Maasai Mara National Reserve lies along Kenya’s south west border with Tanzania, bisected by the Mara River and bordered on the western boundary by a spectacular escarpment (several scenes in the film 'Out of Africa' were shot in this area). The Maasai Mara National Reserve is an area of 1,042 square miles and is the home of the greatest variety and largest number of wild animals in Kenya. It is also the northern extension of Tanzania’s famous Serengeti National Park and the animals wander freely across man made boundaries

It is impossible to prepare the first time visitor for the number of animals they may see. The waving wheat-eared grass attracts huge numbers of plains game. Zebra, giraffe and a variety of gazelle, including topi and eland, graze in proximity to large herds of buffalo, while elephant meander across the landscape or browse in the cooler areas of forest and swamp. During the Great Migration, the whole area may be dotted with herds of visiting wildebeest (resident animals remain in the Maasai Mara National Reserve throughout the year) mingling among the smaller game such as warthog, jackal, hyena, mongoose and bat-eared fox to name but a few. From the normal quiet and peaceful rolling grasslands, the National Reserve resounds to the lowing of the visiting herds that remain until the rains once again turn the grass green in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. Then they return from whence they came and the 'circle of life' repeats itself. A count during the migration in the 1980's revealed over a million wildebeest, half a million gazelle, and over 200,000 zebra resident in the National Reserve at any one time

In recent years the Maasai Mara National Reserve has been host to the 'Big Cat Diary' and viewers all over the world are familiar with the prides of lion, and families of cheetah and leopard

For the visitors more used to the busy helter-skelter life of big cities, it is a once in a lifetime experience to sit in silence beside a pride of lions and watch their daily interaction - an experience that will remain in their memories throughout their lives. In the Maasai Mara National Reserve, people of the area co-exist alongside the Animal Kingdom. The Maasai tribes who inhabit this area have lived in peaceful companionship with the game for centuries. It is common to see a Maasai 'enkang' on the skyline close to where herds of elephants are 'chomping' their way through the high grass. The bird life in the Maasai Mara National Reserve is also prolific with 350 different species recorded including 53 different birds of prey

Where you're staying

Located on the eastern boundary of the world-famous Maasai Mara National Reserve is the Mara Sopa Safari Lodge, boasting a breathtaking vista of some of Africa's prime game-viewing land, since the reserve is home to almost all of the most coveted game, including the 'Big 5', as well as being the annual Great Migration destination for massive herds

Located on the slopes of the Oloolamuita hills, the Mara Sopa Safari Lodge offers magnificent views across the eastern reaches of the reserve. Set in matured wooded gardens, the lodge has an ethnic design that incorporates traditional round buildings with thatched roofs and interiors that reflect the rich Maasai culture and art

The Mara Sopa Safari Lodge offers a wide range of activities including a refreshing swimming pool for a quick cool off between safari activities. It is also a ‘watering-hole’ for sunset cocktails and the setting for African Theme Nights. A handsomely stocked gift shop is on-site with a wide array of souvenirs and clothing available and each spacious cottage-style guest room is furnished with two queen-sized beds, en-suite bathrooms and a veranda

Today’s Experience

You leave the Maasai Mara National Reserve after breakfast and travel across the 'breadbasket' of Kenya, where acres of wheat and barley litter the landscape as you head north to Narok, the district headquarters of this part of Maasailand. Then you journey across the vast plains on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, keeping an eye out for herds of giraffe and gazelle as you head up the Mau Escarpment, before arriving at Lake Nakuru Lodge for lunch. The waters of Lake Nakuru are often colored a shimmering 'flamingo pink', from thousands of the beautiful elegant birds lining its shores

Where you're going

The most famous of the Rift Valley lakes, Nakuru is a soda lake set within the 24 square mile Lake Nakuru National Park, renowned for its magnificent array of spectacular bird life. It is the migratory flocks of thousands of greater and lesser flamingo that really create the attraction here when the lake’s shallow waters turn pink with their vast numbers. Black and white rhino, the rare Rothschild’s giraffe, a small herd of buffalo, dik-dik, klipspringer, eland, the occasional leopard and many other plains game are also found here

Where you're staying

Situated in a wonderland that lies in the heart of one of Kenya’s most densely animal-populated wetland National Parks, the Lake Nakuru Safari Lodge provides quality and service that makes it one of the finest safari lodges in the world, and the perfect relaxation getaway. With an atmosphere that is warm and relaxed, and an ambience that embraces the uniqueness of Lake Nakuru National Park’s wetland ecosystem, memories of Lake Nakuru Safari Lodge will linger with you for a lifetime!

The safari lodge blends well with its environment, allowing for commanding views of the Lesser Flamingo interspersed with the Greater Flamingo for which Lake Nakuru is justly famous. This also allows other animals like giraffe, buffalo and zebra to browse peacefully close to the safari lodge and its environs, much to the fascination of its guests

A team of friendly and competent staff members is always at hand to offer guests service that is unmatched anywhere in Kenya – a country known for its warm hospitality. Excellent cuisine includes outside catering, bush barbeques, African Nights and sunset cocktails

The guest rooms each with its private bathroom are wonderfully stylish with rustic African furnishings to complement the safari experience and at the same time offer a warm cozy ambience where guests can kick back and relax

Overland transfer from Lake Nakuru National Park to Amboseli National Park / 260 Miles - Approx. 6 ½ hours
Afternoon Safari Game Viewing Drive in Amboseli National Park en-route to the safari lodge
Today’s Experience

After an early breakfast, you depart with a picnic lunch, leaving the Great Rift Valley behind and travel back to Kenya's colorful Capital - Nairobi. From Nairobi, you head south in the direction of neighboring Tanzania toward the majestic Mt. Kilimanjaro and Amboseli National Park situated at the foot of the mountain where on arrival, you commence with an immediate safari game viewing drive arriving at you lodge before sunset

Where you're going

The 151 square mile Amboseli National Park lies due south of Nairobi, within clear views of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain at 19,343 feet. The waters of the mountain feed the seasonal swamps and marshes on which the game and birds that live in the park rely. It is here that photographers will hope to shoot the classic picture of the elephant or giraffe standing against the dramatic backdrop of the snow capped mountain

The park takes its name from the seasonal Lake Amboseli, which in dry weather resembles a massive salt pan. In recent years it has become world famous as the home of herds of elephant, which lived here in comparative safety throughout the times of intense poaching during the 1980’s and early 1990’s

For years the Maasai shared the area with the wild animals. Pre-occupied with their own herds of cattle they seldom bothered the game, but in dry seasons, there is insufficient pasture for game and cattle. Subsequently, an area of 146 square miles was set aside as a National Reserve, but the Maasai still graze their cattle inside the park from time to time

The large herds of elephant graze in the permanent swamps. On the plains, there are still large herds of buffalo and plains game such as gazelle and zebra, and wildebeest abound. Families of warthog trot off through the all-pervasive dust while hyena and jackal vie with the flocks of vultures over the carcasses left by the occasional lion or cheetah

The birdlife in this area is magnificent. During the wet season, water birds settle within the swamps and after the rains, it is a common sight to see large flocks of flamingo wading in pools of water below the mountain. Raptors soar in the thermals rising from the hot ground, ostrich and bustard stamp across the plains, and weavers and other colorful smaller birds are found in the grounds of the safari lodges

Where you're staying

Set on 200 acres of private land on the foothills of Africa’s highest mountain, Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Amboseli Sopa Safari Lodge is perfectly poised to provide a luxurious base from which to explore the park and get some great pictures of the incredible mountain!

The safari lodge is close to where Ernest Hemingway lived whilst writing his famous novel, 'The Snows of Kilimanjaro'

Each of the guest rooms at this intimate property has a private veranda on which to relax, sunbathe and take in the views. All rooms are en-suite, with walk-in shower, lavatory, washbasin, and shaving socket – they are all modern, spacious, and comfortable

Meals are a cosmopolitan combination of European, African and Asian dishes, all made with fresh produce, and served from a colorful buffet. There are also several bars, a great pool, TV lounge and many other small unexpected niceties that make this safari lodge a superb venue

Today’s Experience

You leave Amboseli National Park this morning and head south toward Namanga Border Town to complete Immigration and Customs formalities after which, you enter Tanzania. Your journey continues to Arusha, the 'gateway' to the Tanzanian safari circuit and the half way point between Cape Town and Cairo

After lunch, you depart from Arusha and pass through the Maasai Steppe filled with many picturesque African villages as well as maize, coffee, and banana plantations as you head toward Lake Manyara National Park. At the town of Makayuni, you turn North West and continue the journey up through the scenic Baobab tree strewn escarpment that brings you to your safari lodge perched on the edge of the Rift Valley with stunning views over the distant Lake Manyara

Where you're going

At only 127 square miles, much of which is the lake, Lake Manyara National Park is one of the northern circuit’s smallest parks. Despite its size, Lake Manyara National Park boasts a fascinating ecosystem and an abundance of both wildlife and bird life

The lake is home to several groups of hippopotamus and species of birds including pelicans and storks. The number of trees in the park’s forest area, fed by underground springs, is home to a variety of monkeys and large troupes of baboons

Larger mammals including elephants, Cape buffalo, and giraffe roam the park. Lake Manyara National Park also has a reputation for tree climbing lions whilst in reality, all lions climb trees and there is a chance to spot them in any of the parks

Located at the foot of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, the cliff wall forms a dramatic backdrop and borderline to the park

Where you're staying

Standing high on the bluff of a dramatic ochre and terracotta-streaked cliff above the flamingo-frosted expanse of Lake Manyara’s gleaming alkaline waters, the Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge commands panoramic views across the volcano-studded floor of the Great Rift Valley

Designed to reflect the brilliance of Lake Manyara’s unique birdlife, the safari lodge draws on an inspirational architectural motif that melds swooping avian curves with the gentle concentric patterns of traditional Maasai 'Bomas' (encampments) whilst the vibrantly colored frescoes lining the walls depict the intricacy of bird migratory patterns

The ambiance of the safari lodge is a fusion of lakeside tranquility, towering volcanic splendor, and adventure-packed sporting activity

Each circular, closely-thatched guest room with its private bathroom, echo the traditional Maasai 'Boma' style of construction whilst featuring a vibrant interior design concept that reflects the Maasai people's abiding love of brilliant scarlet-and-indigo checked 'Shukas' (cloaks) and bright yellow, white, blue and orange beadwork.

Each guest room has a private veranda that boasts breathtaking views of the shimmering reaches of the flamingo-frosted lake way below at the foot of the escarpment

Today’s Experience

With Lake Manyara in your wake, your journey continues North West across the stunning hilly countryside of the highlands filled with wheat and coffee plantations into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where you enjoy your first glimpse of the Ngorongoro Crater

Beyond the crater lies the vast plains of the Serengeti National Park, one of the most sought after safari destinations in the world

The road is long with many a winding turn – but the reward is immeasurable!

Where you're going

Perhaps the best-known name in wildlife parks, the Serengeti National Park is located along Tanzania’s northeastern border with Kenya. At 5,700 square miles, it is currently the largest national park in Tanzania and along with Kenya’s Maasai Mara and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area comprises one of the largest wildlife ecosystems in Africa

The Great Migration of more than 1.6 million wildebeest is perhaps the most dramatic feature of this park. The herds enter at the park’s eastern edge around mid-January and begin calving in the south of the park in mid-February. In April and May, they begin moving northward and large groups split off heading to the west whilst others continue to move north. June and July find the herds spread along the centre of the Serengeti from Seronera westward into Grumeti. In late July and through August the herds begin to accumulate. Crossing the Grumeti and Mara Rivers, the migration will move to Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve by September

But the Serengeti National Park is much more than just the migration. Resident non-migratory game is extensive with a variety ranging from hyrax to elephant. There are more than 3,000 lions in Serengeti as well as leopards, cheetah and some of the other smaller cats. The Grumeti River is famous for its giant crocodiles that are believed to date back to the age of the dinosaurs

Birders are always thrilled at the site of more than 500 species of birds, which range from majestic eagles to tiny bee-eaters

Where you're staying

Nestled in the acacia woodland on the edge of the escarpment overlooking the plains of the southwestern Serengeti National Park, one of the most famous national parks in the world, and host to the largest and most spectacular annual great migration of wildebeest, you’ll find the Serengeti Sopa Safari Lodge

Set in the Nyarboro Hills overlooking the Serengeti plains the lodge is airy and spacious and painted with rich earth colors reflecting the tones of the surrounding area. The lobby features large comfortable chairs made of driftwood, huge cushions, and colorful throw pillows. A low wooden beam ceiling spans pillars shaped as huge pots stacked together. Beautiful metallic wall lamps with soft lighting complete the overall, warm, and intimate effect

The guest rooms each with its private bathroom all feature two queen size beds and are tastefully furnished using local fabrics and pictures. Entering the guest room, you will find a lounge area with a mini bar whilst in the front is a verandah with 2 comfortable chairs and coffee table facing glass windows which unashamedly expose the vast Serengeti plains that extend as far as the naked eye can see

The open dining area is spacious and airy with natural light emanating from the floor to ceiling windows. This artistically decorated area boasts magnificent views of the Serengeti plains offset with the nuances of wrought iron chairs and wooden tabletops. The interior is rich mud red in color with grottoes featuring local artifacts found in the region. Behind the buffet area is a shimmering blue placement, like a glass mosaic, adding to the blending theme

Today’s Experience

After breakfast today, you depart for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area viewing game across the vast Serengeti plains and stopping off at the Olduvai Gorge en route. The Olduvai Gorge acquired its name from the Sansevieria bush that grows profusely in the area, named Olduvai by the Maasai

The Gorge is about 31 miles long and in some places about 295 feet deep, and is located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area between the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater. The Gorge was discovered by a German entomologist, Prof. Kattwinkel who instigated an expedition prior to World War 1! The exploration continued by Dr. Louis Leakey and his wife, who, in 1959 found humanoid remains of Zinjanthropus, later renamed Australopithecus Boisei, an early form of man

You will have time to walk through the small simple Museum at the Olduvai Gorge, where you can view copy displays of some of the finds as well as pictures of what life was like for the gorge’s earliest inhabitants

After a picnic lunch you continue to your safari lodge set high atop the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater

Where you're going

The Ngorongoro Crater is referred to as the 'Eighth Wonder of the Natural World'. The area formed over centuries of volcanic activity dating back more than twenty-five million years. This activity developed after shifts in tectonic plates created a rupture and split in the land that is now the Great Rift Valley

There are several extinct volcanoes in the Conservation Area, but perhaps the best known of them is the Ngorongoro Crater. At 102 square miles on the floor, it is the world’s largest intact and unflooded caldera. The view from the 8,000 feet rim is breathtaking. At the crater’s floor, some 2,000 feet below, more than 30,000 resident animals carry on the daily struggle of survival. Here, the 'Big 5' are easily spotted with leopards protecting their kills in trees and massive rhinoceroses in search of fresh grass. Cape buffalo with oxpeckers perched on their backs are seen in large herds

Lake Magadi, the Swahili word for 'Soda Lake', is at the centre of the crater. It often provides home to thousands of lesser flamingos as well as a variety of other waterfowl. Hippo pools, where the massive hippopotami spend their time relaxing, and keeping cool dot the crater floor! Huge bull elephants come to the crater’s floor in search of minerals from the soda lake whilst the females and young remain behind on the rim

The management plan for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area allows for the use of the land by both the wildlife and the indigenous Maasai and other tribesmen that have resided in the area for generations. Visitors often awake to the sound of cattle bells as Maasai warriors lead their cattle down the wall of the crater to the floor below

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is also home to Olduvai Gorge. Known as "The Cradle of Mankind," the gorge is the site of the famous archaeological work of the Leakey family including the discovery of Zinjanthropus Bosei or "Nutcracker Man"

Travelers that are more adventurous can trek to smaller craters such as Olmoti and Empakai. Some also choose to descend to Lake Natron, passing the still active Ol Donyo L’Engai. In the northern area of the Conservation Area along the border with the Serengeti is Lake Ndutu. This popular soda lake is home to a number of waterfowl including flamingos and is along the wildebeest migration route

Where you're staying

The Ngorongoro Sopa Safari Lodge is located on Lemala Hill on the uppermost eastern rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, making this the only tourist development on the eastern rim of the crater. The views into the crater floor from here are spectacular and the sunsets magnificent. A major advantage of staying at the Ngorongoro Sopa Safari Lodge is that you'll commence your Ngorongoro Crater Safari within 5-minutes of leaving the lodge arriving into the Crater well before other visitors as the park gate is very close to the lodge

The lodge is tastefully decorated, spacious and all of the guest rooms are modern, comfortable and equipped with everything one would expect from a safari lodge of this class. All of the guest rooms are very spacious and each has two queen sized beds and a separate dressing area. Additionally, each room has a glass-fronted verandah from where you'll enjoy a private uninterrupted view of the Ngorongoro Crater

At an altitude of 7,792 feet, the lodge experiences cool and even cold weather, especially during the winter months of June and July when temperatures can get as low as 50 degrees Fahrenheit. However, you will enjoy sunshine during most of the year and should take care when sunbathing by the pool due to the altitude

The cuisine and service here is stylish with meals being a massif collection of delicious international and local Tanzanian dishes

Today’s Experience

After a hearty breakfast at your lodge, you head south east toward Lake Manyara, Mto wa Mbu village and further beyond to the Tarangire National Park

Through the highlands of the Karatu District you’ll view scenic wheat plains and coffee plantations before journeying down the spectacular escarpment from where you turn south on to the main Arusha – Dodoma road and into Tarangire National Park

Where you're going

At 1,004 square miles, Tarangire National Park provides variety and excitement. The landscape is dotted with unique baobab trees which have the appearance that they were planted with the roots on top. The trunks of these massive trees often show the scars of damage done by elephants that dig into them with their tusks for the minerals inside. Some of the resulting holes can become large enough for a man to step inside

Tarangire is a dry weather park, best visited between June and February. However, game viewing is good throughout the year. The most prominent animal in Tarangire is the elephant. Large herds roam the park in search of fresh grass. As there is such an abundance of grass, the herds are confident of finding food even in the driest months

The Tarangire River dissects the park and along it, a variety of animals can be found searching for fresh water. Of particular interest are the rock pythons that can be found lazing in the sun, digesting a recent kill. These large, non-venomous constrictors are among the largest snakes in Africa but the least threatening to man

A number of the smaller and less common antelopes can be found in this park along with the usual selection of gazelles and impala. These include the fringe-eared Oryx and unusual long-necked gerenuk

Tarangire National Park is popular with birders and features more than 550 species. Visitors spend days observing hundreds of birds including the spectacular Bateleur eagle or the red-and-yellow Barbet

Where you're staying

Hidden from view between the kopjes lies the Tarangire Sopa Safari Lodge, surrounded by ancient eerie-looking baobab trees!  The area is the home to the greatest concentration of elephants in Africa, and other game including the elusive leopard. Over 400 bird species can be spotted here as well. With water constantly available in the area, the greenery is lush providing a wonderful contrast to the burnt red colored earth

The welcoming area at the lodge is and airy with marble floors from which sliding glass doors open out to a verandah where you can relax and enjoy the panoramic view. The ceiling has a wooden finishing, and the décor with plants in strategic places, gives the lobby a feeling of total relaxation, much needed after the long and dusty drive to the lodge

Spacious guest rooms, all with a private lounge area featuring a well stocked mini bar are fully carpeted and each has 2 queen-size beds covered by mosquito netting. Ceiling fans keep the rooms cool and sliding glass doors open out onto a balcony which afford guests a magnificent view of the rolling landscape teaming with free roaming wildlife

Located between the lobby and the dining room, comfortable seating is available for guests relaxation and a large spacious light and airy dining room offers outside seating ideal for BBQ’s and 'Theme Dinners'
