Where you're going

The capital of Kenya and a vital tourist gateway to the game parks of East Africa, Nairobi is the perfect originating point for safaris. The name Nairobi comes from the Maasai phrase Enkare Nyirobi, which translates to "the place of cool waters.” However, it is popularly known as the "Green City in the Sun." The city’s history dates back to the times of rail travel and was a stopping place on the rail line between the coast and Uganda because there was always a plentiful supply of water to fill the boilers on the locomotive. Founded in 1899, the city was handed capital status from Mombasa in 1905. Today, Nairobi is the most populous city in East Africa with an estimated urban population of between 3.5 and 4 million making it the 4th largest city in Africa. The high altitude makes for pleasant temperatures throughout the year

Just 6 miles from the city center and only 45 square miles in size is Nairobi National Park, Kenya’s oldest National Park, which was established around 1946. With over 500 varieties of birds recorded and more than 100 mammal species, it makes a great early morning or afternoon excursion from the city center. Common sightings include zebra, giraffe, buffalo, ostrich, gazelle, eland, hippo, vulture, and lion. It is also a great place to see black rhino

Where you're staying

Safari Park Hotel & Casino - Nairobi stands proudly in a beautifully landscaped setting incorporating a wide variety of indigenous trees and offering sanctuary to a startling array of birds and butterflies. The history of the Safari Park Hotel & Casino - Nairobi, often described as the Eden of Africa, dates back to the independence of Kenya. The buildings, then occupied by the British Air Forces, were converted into the Hotel, set in a splendid park conceived by internationally famous landscapers. In 1976, the Paradise Group acquired the Hotel, set about a major restoration, and added new buildings. After considerable work, the gala inaugural evening took place in November 1992. The property is located 15 minutes from the city center on the Thika Highway, which heads toward Mt. Kenya

The distinguishing difference of the Safari Park Hotel & Casino - Nairobi is the multi-story complexes of accommodations. The owners chose to create clusters of guest accommodations into Guest Villages to expose the tropical African gardens

Each and every guest room has a balcony overlooking the gardens. Guest rooms feature hand carved wooden four-poster beds, surrounded by modern facilities like refrigerated mini-bars, satellite television, internet connection, electronic safes and more! All of the amenities that you would expect of such a high-class establishment including 24 hour in room dining will ensure that your stay will be pleasant, relaxing and luxurious

Today’s Experience

You leave Nairobi after breakfast today and travel toward Kenya's fertile highlands and head down the Rift Escarpment on a road built by Italian 'prisoners of war' during World War II. Look out for a view of the charming little chapel they built at the foot of the escarpment. You'll pass the impressive Longonot earth satellite station as you head across the Great Rift Valley to Narok. From Narok, you'll travel across acres of wheat and barley, before you reach the Maasai Mara National Reserve

Where you're going

Undoubtedly the best known of all the Kenya Game Reserves, the Maasai Mara National Reserve lies along Kenya’s south west border with Tanzania, bisected by the Mara River and bordered on the western boundary by a spectacular escarpment (several scenes in the film 'Out of Africa' were shot in this area). The Maasai Mara National Reserve is an area of 1,042 square miles and is the home of the greatest variety and largest number of wild animals in Kenya. It is also the northern extension of Tanzania’s famous Serengeti National Park and the animals wander freely across man made boundaries

It is impossible to prepare the first time visitor for the number of animals they may see. The waving wheat-eared grass attracts huge numbers of plains game. Zebra, giraffe and a variety of gazelle, including topi and eland, graze in proximity to large herds of buffalo, while elephant meander across the landscape or browse in the cooler areas of forest and swamp. During the Great Migration, the whole area may be dotted with herds of visiting wildebeest (resident animals remain in the Maasai Mara National Reserve throughout the year) mingling among the smaller game such as warthog, jackal, hyena, mongoose and bat-eared fox to name but a few. From the normal quiet and peaceful rolling grasslands, the National Reserve resounds to the lowing of the visiting herds that remain until the rains once again turn the grass green in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. Then they return from whence they came and the 'circle of life' repeats itself. A count during the migration in the 1980's revealed over a million wildebeest, half a million gazelle, and over 200,000 zebra resident in the National Reserve at any one time

In recent years the Maasai Mara National Reserve has been host to the 'Big Cat Diary' and viewers all over the world are familiar with the prides of lion, and families of cheetah and leopard

For the visitors more used to the busy helter-skelter life of big cities, it is a once in a lifetime experience to sit in silence beside a pride of lions and watch their daily interaction - an experience that will remain in their memories throughout their lives. In the Maasai Mara National Reserve, people of the area co-exist alongside the Animal Kingdom. The Maasai tribes who inhabit this area have lived in peaceful companionship with the game for centuries. It is common to see a Maasai 'enkang' on the skyline close to where herds of elephants are 'chomping' their way through the high grass. The bird life in the Maasai Mara National Reserve is also prolific with 350 different species recorded including 53 different birds of prey

Where you're staying

Located on the eastern boundary of the world-famous Maasai Mara National Reserve is the Mara Sopa Safari Lodge, boasting a breathtaking vista of some of Africa's prime game-viewing land, since the reserve is home to almost all of the most coveted game, including the 'Big 5', as well as being the annual Great Migration destination for massive herds

Located on the slopes of the Oloolamuita hills, the Mara Sopa Safari Lodge offers magnificent views across the eastern reaches of the reserve. Set in matured wooded gardens, the lodge has an ethnic design that incorporates traditional round buildings with thatched roofs and interiors that reflect the rich Maasai culture and art

The Mara Sopa Safari Lodge offers a wide range of activities including a refreshing swimming pool for a quick cool off between safari activities. It is also a ‘watering-hole’ for sunset cocktails and the setting for African Theme Nights. A handsomely stocked gift shop is on-site with a wide array of souvenirs and clothing available and each spacious cottage-style guest room is furnished with two queen-sized beds, en-suite bathrooms and a veranda

The price per person is $499.00 per person, but if you reserve this activity when you make your safari reservation, the price will reduce to $449.00 per person, saving you $50.00!

Today’s Experience

You leave the Maasai Mara National Reserve after breakfast and travel across the 'breadbasket' of Kenya, where acres of wheat and barley litter the landscape as you head north to Narok, the district headquarters of this part of Maasailand. Then you journey across the vast plains on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, keeping an eye out for herds of giraffe and gazelle as you head up the Mau Escarpment, before arriving at Lake Nakuru Lodge for lunch. The waters of Lake Nakuru are often colored a shimmering 'flamingo pink', from thousands of the beautiful elegant birds lining its shores

Where you're going

The most famous of the Rift Valley lakes, Nakuru is a soda lake set within the 24 square mile Lake Nakuru National Park, renowned for its magnificent array of spectacular bird life. It is the migratory flocks of thousands of greater and lesser flamingo that really create the attraction here when the lake’s shallow waters turn pink with their vast numbers. Black and white rhino, the rare Rothschild’s giraffe, a small herd of buffalo, dik-dik, klipspringer, eland, the occasional leopard and many other plains game are also found here

Where you're staying

Situated in a wonderland that lies in the heart of one of Kenya’s most densely animal-populated wetland National Parks, the Lake Nakuru Safari Lodge provides quality and service that makes it one of the finest safari lodges in the world, and the perfect relaxation getaway. With an atmosphere that is warm and relaxed, and an ambience that embraces the uniqueness of Lake Nakuru National Park’s wetland ecosystem, memories of Lake Nakuru Safari Lodge will linger with you for a lifetime!

The safari lodge blends well with its environment, allowing for commanding views of the Lesser Flamingo interspersed with the Greater Flamingo for which Lake Nakuru is justly famous. This also allows other animals like giraffe, buffalo and zebra to browse peacefully close to the safari lodge and its environs, much to the fascination of its guests

A team of friendly and competent staff members is always at hand to offer guests service that is unmatched anywhere in Kenya – a country known for its warm hospitality. Excellent cuisine includes outside catering, bush barbeques, African Nights and sunset cocktails

The guest rooms each with its private bathroom are wonderfully stylish with rustic African furnishings to complement the safari experience and at the same time offer a warm cozy ambience where guests can kick back and relax

Lunch
Dinner
Overland transfer from Lake Nakuru National Park to Amboseli National Park / 260 Miles - Approx. 6 ½ hours
Afternoon Safari Game Viewing Drive in Amboseli National Park en-route to the safari lodge
Today’s Experience

After an early breakfast, you depart with a picnic lunch, leaving the Great Rift Valley behind and travel back to Kenya's colorful Capital - Nairobi. From Nairobi, you head south in the direction of neighboring Tanzania toward the majestic Mt. Kilimanjaro and Amboseli National Park situated at the foot of the mountain where on arrival, you commence with an immediate safari game viewing drive arriving at you lodge before sunset

Where you're going

The 151 square mile Amboseli National Park lies due south of Nairobi, within clear views of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain at 19,343 feet. The waters of the mountain feed the seasonal swamps and marshes on which the game and birds that live in the park rely. It is here that photographers will hope to shoot the classic picture of the elephant or giraffe standing against the dramatic backdrop of the snow capped mountain

The park takes its name from the seasonal Lake Amboseli, which in dry weather resembles a massive salt pan. In recent years it has become world famous as the home of herds of elephant, which lived here in comparative safety throughout the times of intense poaching during the 1980’s and early 1990’s

For years the Maasai shared the area with the wild animals. Pre-occupied with their own herds of cattle they seldom bothered the game, but in dry seasons, there is insufficient pasture for game and cattle. Subsequently, an area of 146 square miles was set aside as a National Reserve, but the Maasai still graze their cattle inside the park from time to time

The large herds of elephant graze in the permanent swamps. On the plains, there are still large herds of buffalo and plains game such as gazelle and zebra, and wildebeest abound. Families of warthog trot off through the all-pervasive dust while hyena and jackal vie with the flocks of vultures over the carcasses left by the occasional lion or cheetah

The birdlife in this area is magnificent. During the wet season, water birds settle within the swamps and after the rains, it is a common sight to see large flocks of flamingo wading in pools of water below the mountain. Raptors soar in the thermals rising from the hot ground, ostrich and bustard stamp across the plains, and weavers and other colorful smaller birds are found in the grounds of the safari lodges

Where you're staying

Set on 200 acres of private land on the foothills of Africa’s highest mountain, Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Amboseli Sopa Safari Lodge is perfectly poised to provide a luxurious base from which to explore the park and get some great pictures of the incredible mountain!

The safari lodge is close to where Ernest Hemingway lived whilst writing his famous novel, 'The Snows of Kilimanjaro'

Each of the guest rooms at this intimate property has a private veranda on which to relax, sunbathe and take in the views. All rooms are en-suite, with walk-in shower, lavatory, washbasin, and shaving socket – they are all modern, spacious, and comfortable

Meals are a cosmopolitan combination of European, African and Asian dishes, all made with fresh produce, and served from a colorful buffet. There are also several bars, a great pool, TV lounge and many other small unexpected niceties that make this safari lodge a superb venue
